Have you ever heard of the Shima-Enaga—Japan’s beloved “snow fairy”? These tiny white birds, known for their round faces and long tails, can only be found in Hokkaido. In this article, I’ll share where to see them, when to visit, and how my family’s spontaneous winter trip began.
How the Trip Began
“I want to go looking for a Shima-Enaga!” my daughter suddenly said one day. That one sentence was all it took for us to plan a quick getaway to Hokkaido—my first visit in seven years. With no detailed plan, I grabbed a TRAVEL Hokkaido guidebook the day before departure and started researching where these adorable birds could be found near Sapporo.
Best Places to See Shima-Enaga Near Sapporo
• Maruyama Park — A peaceful urban park where you can often spot small flocks in winter.
• Odori Park — Right in the city center; occasionally they appear among snow-covered trees.
• Asahiyama Memorial Park — Beautiful city views and quiet wooded trails perfect for birdwatching.
• Hokkaido University Campus — Tree-lined paths that attract many wild birds, including Shima-Enaga.
Best Time to Spot Them
The prime season is December to February, when their white feathers blend beautifully with the snow. Early mornings are often the most active time, especially after light snowfall.
What They Sound Like
Listen for their distinct and adorable “jururu” call—a soft, high-pitched chirp that’s unmistakable once you know it. The sound alone can make any traveler fall in love with these little snow fairies.
